Hi everyone,
Today, January 24th, is the International Day of Education, a day to celebrate the transformative power of learning.
Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, this day highlights education as a human right, a public good, and a public responsibility. Education is the foundation for peace, development, and progress. Yet, despite its importance, we continue to see a growing divide.
Millions of children worldwide are unable to access quality education, left behind by circumstances such as poverty, conflict, or systemic inequality. The disparity in access to education isn’t just a global issue—it’s a human issue.
When education is inaccessible, it perpetuates cycles of inequality, limiting opportunities for individuals and societies alike.
A Timeless Perspective on Education
Education isn’t just about books, exams, or classrooms. As John Dewey described, education is a “social need and function,” a “process of living and growth” that intertwines the social and individual aspects of life.
Dewey’s famous words capture the essence of education:
“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”
This perspective reminds us that education is about more than academic achievement. It’s about empowering individuals to grow, contribute, and thrive in their communities.
But how do we ensure that education fulfills its promise in a world marked by such disparity?
The Role of Technology in Education
Technology and innovation can help bridge the gap in access to education. AI, online learning platforms, and digital tools have made it possible to reach more students than ever before.
Here’s how technology is transforming education:
1️⃣ Expanding Access: Digital platforms provide learning opportunities to students in remote or underserved regions, breaking down geographical and financial barriers.
2️⃣ Personalized Learning: AI can tailor educational content to suit individual needs, helping students learn at their own pace and style.
3️⃣ Supporting Teachers: Technology can reduce administrative burdens, giving educators more time to focus on mentoring and inspiring students.
4️⃣ Global Collaboration: Students and teachers can connect across borders, sharing ideas and building cultural understanding.
But we must remember: technology should empower, not replace.
Education’s heart lies in the human connection between teachers and students, the creativity it sparks, and the empathy it fosters.
The Future of Education
As we look to the future, education must embrace both humanity and technology.
The goal should not be to replace traditional methods but to enhance them, creating a system where no one is left behind. It’s about fostering critical thinking over rote memorization, collaboration over competition, and lifelong learning over one-time achievements.
Education is not a finite journey—it’s a continuous process of growth, for individuals and for society.
A Personal Reflection
As someone trained as a teacher, I carry these principles with me in everything I do.
While I don’t always highlight this part of my background, my time in Teacher Training High School and the Faculty of Education instilled in me a deep respect for the transformative power of learning.
At the same time, I recognize the challenges.
Technology is a powerful tool, but it’s not the sole answer. Real change requires a collective effort—governments, educators, communities, and individuals must work together to create equitable opportunities for all.
One thing is clear: technology and AI are here to support us, not replace us. It’s up to us to leverage these tools wisely, ensuring they enhance education while preserving its human core.
