Nobody Notices As Much As You Think: Here’s Why It Matters 🧠
💡 The Spotlight Effect, Social Media Algorithms & How Newsletters Give You Control

Hi friend,
Today, I was talking to a friend, and he casually mentioned that he didn’t know I was working on newsletters.
I’ve been publishing daily, updating my profiles, and telling everyone about it—but somehow, he missed it.
Then, I saw something similar happen to others:
📌 One of my favorite newsletter writers, Alex from Alex&Books, had a follower who didn’t realize he had a newsletter.
📌 A podcaster friend got a message from a LinkedIn connection saying, “I didn’t know you had a podcast!”
How does this happen?
The Spotlight Effect: We Think Everyone Notices: But They Don’t
We assume people pay way more attention to us than they actually do. This is called the Spotlight Effect—the tendency to believe that others are focused on us when, in reality, they’re caught up in their own lives.
🔹 You post about your work, but most people don’t see it—or forget about it.
🔹 You launch something new, but even your closest friends might not realize it.
🔹 You assume everyone knows what you do, but they don’t.
People are busy. They have their own priorities. And in a world overflowing with content, even those who follow you don’t see everything you share.
Even if people WANT to see your content, algorithms decide what gets shown.
I’ve been posting daily for nearly 60 days—but unless I share a selfie, engagement is unpredictable. Posts get buried. Followers miss updates. Even the most loyal supporters might not see what you’re up to.
📩 With a newsletter, you own your audience.
When you send an email, it lands directly in someone’s inbox.
The open rates and engagement are significantly higher than social media. Instead of hoping an algorithm will show your work.
