The Trap of Details: Missing the Bigger Picture

Hi everyone,

Do you ever feel like you’re stuck in the weeds—spending all your energy on minor decisions or improvements, but missing the bigger picture?

It’s a common trap, and I’ve caught myself in it more times than I can count.

When Details Take Over

Take job applications, for example. If you’re searching for a new role, the key is sending out multiple applications and creating opportunities. But what happens? You spend hours perfecting one CV or tweaking one cover letter for a single position. Meanwhile, 10 other jobs that could be a great fit go unnoticed.

Or let’s talk about my newsletter business. I often find myself focusing on trivial tasks—formatting, adjusting small details, or experimenting with ideas that don’t bring immediate value. Instead of working on client outreach, crafting Loom videos, or pitching new services, I get stuck.

As Stephen R. Covey reminds us:
"The key is in not spending time, but in investing it."

Spending hours on low-priority tasks may feel productive, but it doesn’t help you achieve what truly matters.

Why Does This Happen?

There are a few reasons we fall into this trap:
1️⃣ Fear of the Big Steps: Big actions—like making 10 job applications or pitching your services—can feel overwhelming, so we focus on what feels manageable.
2️⃣ Perfectionism: We convince ourselves that we need to perfect every detail before moving forward.
3️⃣ Procrastination Disguised as Productivity: Focusing on minor details feels like progress, but it often delays real action.

How to Shift Focus to the Big Picture

If you find yourself stuck in the details, here are some strategies to help:

1️⃣ Identify the Big Picture Goal: Remind yourself of the main objective. Are you trying to land a job? Grow your business? Deepen a relationship? Keep this goal front and center.

2️⃣ Prioritize High-Impact Actions: Ask yourself: What actions will have the biggest effect on my goal? Focus your energy there.

3️⃣ Set Time Limits on Minor Tasks: Perfection isn’t always necessary. Set a timer for smaller tasks, and move on when it’s done.

4️⃣ Track Your Progress: Measure progress based on meaningful results, not how many small tasks you checked off.

5️⃣ Get an Outside Perspective: Sometimes, we get stuck in our own heads. Talk to a mentor, friend, or coach to help you refocus.

A Personal Reflection

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how often I get caught up in the small stuff. Whether it’s obsessing over tiny changes in my newsletter or perfecting a single pitch, I’ve realized that these efforts, while not useless, often distract me from the bigger actions that really drive results.

For example, instead of spending 30 minutes tweaking my newsletter or educational email course, I could send five outreach emails or record a Loom video for a potential client. Those actions might feel scarier, but they’re the ones that truly move the needle.

This isn’t just about business—it’s about life. It’s about stepping back, looking at the bigger picture, and ensuring that our daily actions align with our long-term goals.
